CLASSES CLASSES CLASSES!!
Writing Picture Books I (WPB I) with Charlotte Sullivan: Building A Picture Book $280 ($40/session). 7 sessions, 2.5 hours each. Classes capped at 7-8 students. Two sections offered: Wednesdays – PM CLASSES (10/5 – 11/30) and Thursdays – AM CLASSES (10/6 to 12/1).
Class description: In this course, students will dig into the fundamentals of creating picture books. Discussions will focus on techniques for creative process, how to focus and develop a project, how to establish a unifying style and structure, and how keep “the child audience” at the center. As we address craft and process, we’ll closely examine published books and touch on realities of the market. In-class and take-home exercises will bridge craft concepts to students’ actual work. This class is open to beginners and experienced writers looking to explore familiar concepts in new ways. Writers and illustrators are welcome, though the class will be approached from a writing perspective.
For more information or to register for this class, contact firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:
1) A brief manuscript in progress OR a brief description of a project idea
2) Provide a brief statement about where you are in your creative journey (Brand new to picture books? Been working for a long time? Published?)
3) Indicate the section you wish to attend: Wed PM or Thurs AM.
Member Catherine Stier will be teaching an NEISD Community education class this fall for adults on writing picture books for children called “Beyond Once Upon a Time: Writing Children’s Picture Books with Author Catherine Stier.”
Course description: Writing picture books for publication is a deceptively complex pursuit that requires dedication and an understanding of this genre and current market practices. Award-winning author Catherine Stier will offer insights on crafting stories and non-fiction works that engage young children. She will discuss myths of writing for children, current trends in traditional publishing and the experience of working with critique groups and editors to complete a final draft. Participants will be invited to write, share, and receive feedback on their own picture book manuscript in class.
The course will be held at Reagan High School and will run for 4 weeks. Fee is $85. For more information, and to sign up for the class, visit www.communityed.neisd.net.
