We are lucky to host Minneapolis author Sheila O’Connor for an interactive learning workshop for students of all levels who are interested in exploring the novel form. Through a series of writing exercises, lecture and discussion, we will explore strategies for entering the fictional dream of the novel. Students will generate early material and should come prepared to write with a spirit of adventure. Whether you are deep into a novel or flirting with a new idea, you’ll leave with new understanding of your project and how to enter the world of this story…and your next one.

Please bring a notebook.

We have made a slight change to the format of the workshop that should not affect your actual experience. Sheila has been facing health challenges this summer, so we recently opted to have her join us via ZOOM (video conference) for the full, scheduled workshop. This will eliminate the strain of travel for her, while still allowing us to interact in “real” time. Sheila will be able to see and hear everyone in the room, and we her. She is very eager for this workshop, and looks forward to meeting all of you! We appreciate your understanding in this matter. If you have any questions about this change or anything else, don’t hesitate to reach out:

Sheila’s three latest books will be available for purchase through The Twig Book Shop, with cash, check, or credit card. If you’d like to get her books signed, you’ll be able to request personalized bookplates and have them mailed directly to you.

Sheila O’Connor is the author of five novels: Tokens of Grace, Where No Gods Came, Sparrow Road, Keeping Safe the Stars and Until Tomorrow, Mr. Marsworth. Her hybrid novel V will be forthcoming from Rose Metal Press in 2019. Awards for her books include the Michigan Prize for Literary Fiction, Minnesota Book Award, International Reading Award, and Midwest Booksellers Award among others.   Her books have been included in Best Books of the Year by Booklist, VOYA, Book Page, Bank Street, Chicago Public Library, and Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers.  A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, she is an Associate Professor in the MFA program at Hamline University where she serves as Fiction Editor for Water~Stone Review.

(Charlotte Sullivan Wild, our Regional Advisor, studied fiction with Sheila at Hamline University. Sheila is a sought-after professor known for guiding students into deeper craft knowledge through her guided writing exercises. Gather your writing friends! You want to sign up for this one!)
